What is Innovation?

Products, services, tools, models, processes, interventions that go beyond traditional approaches, challenge the status quo, leverage emerging opportunities and that add greater or new value than current practices.

The Innovation landscape cuts across a number of tools, methodologies and approaches and should be guided by the Innovation Principles.

What is Required?

A Gender Responsive Innovation Ecosystem, which includes greater investment in gender equality and women’s empowerment - including structrual issues - as focus of innovation and adopting gender as a lens which informs all innovation work and broader innovation systems (e.g. policy, education, investments).

Uptake of innovation as an orientation and practice amongst gender advocates, women’s groups and national women’s machineries and policy makers.

Support to women and girls as innovators, agents of change and influencers.

Scale and replication of proven innovations for gender equality and women’s empowerment.

Innovation Highlight:
The 'Buy from Women' Enterprise Platform

UN Women is piloting the Buy from Women Enterprise Platform, a data-driven, enterprise platform that combines an open source end-to-end cloud-based, and mobile enabled supply chain system to connect women farmers to information, finance and markets. This product innovation enables women farmers to have a 360 degree view of their business lifecycle.  It provides real time reports in dashboard form of key performance indicators including forecasted yields and sales revenue.
